Colour8 is thrilled to welcome San Antonio, TX-based percussionist and improviser Dane Rousay to the family with a succinct, radically experimental two-track EP titled IMP / ENV. Side A, “IMP”, is a free improvised drum and percussion-object piece - Rousay's familiar territory - but Side B, “ENV”, a field recording and contact microphone piece, is a departure from their previous work. Rousay describes it as “a piece where I monitored my amplified heart rate in different environments while field recording those environments simultaneously.”
“IMP” is a lively percussion piece focused on the emotional impact that texture and dynamics can have on a listener. Rousay is highly skilled, but their prowess doesn't overpower “IMP”'s exploratory tone. Rousay makes use of the drum kit's full sonic potential and every single hit is highly considered. “ENV”, on the other hand, departs from impact, instead focusing on texture and environment. Intimate and personal, it reveals a more obviously restrained side of Rousay's music. Within find scraping, deep hums, amplified heartbeats, gentle clicks and more.
Dane Rousay has been releasing solo music since 2016. Their self-released debut album blip was well-received by critics, garnering praise from Vital Weekly, Cassette Gods and others. Since then, Rousay has released various experimental pieces via labels such as Kendra Steiner Editions or Hard Fun.
